Youtube video downloader: how to download videos from Youtube

YouTube revolutionized how videos and media are shared online, but simply watching videos on YouTube only scratches the surface of what can be accomplished with Youtube. There are many websites and software programs that allow for videos to be downloaded from the site, allowing for the videos and content to be available online, shared on other websites, or even used it other projects. We have put together a guide on how to download from YouTube and the best programs to do it with.

There are many reasons why someone may want to download a video from Youtube; they may access content that they would otherwise have to pay for, or keep videos to watch for when their computers are offline from the Internet, or edit the videos for use in their own content and projects. Downloaders may want to repost videos and content elsewhere. They may want to save a video in case it is deleted later on, as videos are often removed from Youtube. Most users download from Youtube using different websites that provide Youtube-downloading services for free.

There are Youtube-video downloading services offered on the Internet. One such website is keepvid.com. KeepVid requires a Java applet to run and not only allows users to download videos from Youtube, but also allows users to download from RuTube, SoundCloud, Tudou, CollegeHumor, Dailymotion, Google Video, Megavideo, Myspace, and many others. It has a very simple interface; the user simply pastes in the URL of a video and KeepVid will give the user the video. The video comes in WebM, 3GP, .flv or .mp4 format; .mp4 is compatible with more video players than the .flv format is. Recently Youtube videos can also be downloaded in .mp3, that is, in an audio-only format. Keepvid.com is a free, ad-supported site, though there is a program which a user needs to purchase a license to use. Keepvid.com also provides a bookmarklet tool that allows users to download videos as they browse.

Saveyoutube.com is similar to keepvid.com: it is a free web service wherein the user enters a URL and hits Download, and the site downloads the video onto the user's hard drive. Saveyoutube also needs Java to run; like keepvid.com, the site allows .mp4, .flv, WebM and 3GP formats. Another option for users who want to download videos with Saveyoutube is to type the word “save” in front of the “you” in any youtube URL, for instance: http://saveyoutube.com/watch?v=dXP2GdqYCOM. It also allows the user to download videos in any audio format, but this requires installing another tool on the user's hard drive. Furthermore, Saveyoutube, unlike Keepvid, only works with Youtube videos.

Other free methods for downloading Youtube videos also exist, such as downloading software in the user's Internet browser. Firefox has a browser extension called NetVideoHunter which adds a button to the user's toolbar. Go to any video online and click the NetVideoHunter button to download the video. It allows the user to add the video to a queue and downloads the video as a .flv file, and also gives options for different video qualities. Another browser extension option for Firefox is the Easy Youtube Video Downloader. This one offers more file formats, including M4A, MP3, MP4, AAC, FLV, and HD quality options. There are also free desktop applications that also allow you to download Youtube videos. One such is the VDownloader application. Once installed, the application can save videos as AVI, MKV, MP4, MPG, 3GP, VCD, SVCD, DVD, FLV, or MP3, and will export the videos to the user's mobile devices as well. The Free Youtube Downloader is a very popular, highly-rated Windows application that also allows users to download videos in formats including, though not limited to, AVI, WMV, MOV, MP3, MP4. These are very flexible formats compatible with many players and devices. For Mac users, an application called MacTubes, which allows batch-downloading and outputs in many different formats, including HD.

Depending on the website used to download Youtube videos or the source of the download file for desktop applications (i.e. CNET), downloading from Youtube is usually pretty safe and will not come with harmful malware. As with all Internet downloads, though, it is important to exercise intelligent downloading habits when using the downloading sites, and to have a good antivirus in case. Some people may wonder about the legality of downloading videos from Youtube or elsewhere on the web. This question has been debated and contested by many, and there are arguments for either side. Many video downloading sites cite the Betamax case as justification for the legality of downloading videos from the Internet. The 1984 Betamax case stated that making individual copies of videos for time shifting purposes did not infringe copyright laws. Controversy over the legality of Youtube and other video downloads arises from the question of whether the user is breaking copyright laws. Many take the view that downloading videos is only illegal is the original content uploaded on to Youtube was illegal content, as in, the uploader did not hold the copyright rights. Youtube changed its terms of use on April 11, 2012, after having run into many problems with users downloading their videos, to read:

“Content is provided to you AS IS. You may access Content for your information and personal use solely as intended through the provided functionality of the Service and as permitted under these Terms of Service. You shall not download any Content unless you see a “download” or similar link displayed by YouTube on the Service for that Content. You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any Content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licensors of the Content. YouTube and its licensors reserve all rights not expressly granted in and to the Service and the Content.”

However, other video sites do not take the same strict stance as Youtube does in their terms of usage. This also does not resolve situations where users who upload legal content are okay with their videos being used for other purposes.

In essence, there are many methods in which an Internet user may download Youtube videos or videos from other sites on to their own hard drives. Though the legality question is still up in the air, the resources for downloading online videos has proliferated across the Internet without all having been forced to shut down yet.

After your download music videos from Youtube, what programs or advice do you have about separating the music from the video so that I can create just a music file.
